THIS book is the outcome of lectures given at Jena on October 23 and 24, 1906, in connection with the Theological Vacation Course. These lectures grappled with certain problems which deal with the sharp oppositions that perplex our life to-day, and therefore seem to call very specially for elucidation. In the course of our inquiry we have sought to show as clearly as possible what these oppositions are, and have done our best to surmount them. The first lecture deals with the grounding of religion in the inner life. Our aim in this lecture is to find some mean between the older thought which favoured the cosmological approach to religion, and the newer which takes the human soul as its starting-point, but is so liable to the defects of vagueness and formlessness. Over against both these methods we proceed to elaborate a system which, while based on the inner life, still preserves a cosmic character. In this way a clear distinction is drawn between a religion of the spiritual life and a religion that is merely humanistic. The subject of the second section is " Religion and History." There is hardly anything so significant for the position of religion to-day as the tendency to refer continually to history. Whatever the advantages of such reference, we must not ignore its dangers. It was incumbent on us to weigh them well, and in particular to ascertain whether it were possible to overcome the evils of a stifling and enervating historicity, whilst still maintaining the significance of history in opposition to a radicalism which is hostile to it. This we could not do without framing certain fundamental convictions as to the meaning of history which shed a new light on the picture of life as a whole, and therefore concern each of us individually.

A Sweetheart Deal
What a sweet deal! That is the theme and the emphasis of this Christmas book. In this book, you will encounter again and again, God's incredible offer in the unspeakable gift of His only begotten Son. When Gabriel said to Mary, "You shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins" (Matt. 1:21), that was, and is, the sweetest deal that has been and will ever be given to sinful men and women. Luke records the essence of this stupendous news of the angel this way: "Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people" (Luke 2:10). That message of the angel is the true spirit and meaning of the Christmas story. In it is God's sweetheart deal of His incredible offer to you and me--the unspeakable gift of His only begotten Son. Isaiah, the prophet, also speaks of this marvelous gift of God to man: "For unto us a Child is born. Unto us a Son is given. And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of peace" (Isaiah 9:6). How sweet a deal is this!
Christmas is a most wonderful time. There is no other time of year that gladdens our hearts like the Christmas season. Even those who make no pretense at following Jesus will readily admit that this time of year is the most joyful, the most cheerful. It is all about the birth of the Christ child. He is the reason for the season. Millions of men and women, boys and girls, celebrate His birth with great joy.
This book, in eight chapters, seeks to capture the sweetness, the joy, and the cheer of Christmas in the following:
It is the author's Christmas wish that you will read, contemplate, and find joy in the story of the Christ child. It is the author's Christmas wish that you will accept God's sweetheart deal, in the incredible offer of the unspeakable gift of His only begotten Son
